Quote of the Week – November 30, 2011 – Truffles

“The truffle is among the world’s most mysterious foods. Man has not tamed it, still has not figured out a surefire way to cultivate it, though progress is being made.”

Can you feel the excitement? Smell the smells? Thanksgiving dinner is just hours away. (Thanks for the photo, Mike!)

Penitential Cavatelli and Sausages

It wasn’t Sunday. But on Sunday we ate Thanksgiving leftovers, a very good thing. However, I noticed a note of disappointment in Louisa’s voice when she commented “don’t we always have pasta on Sunday?” Well, yes dear, we always have pasta on Sunday. Always, when we’re not on the road someplace, or have some other outside commitment that day, or – and this is the big one – I have leftovers to give me extra time in my day. So we ate leftovers on Sunday, instead of pasta. And I gained time in my day. Don’t ask what I did with that extra time, because it really isn’t worth writing home about.

But, the week was not complete. I felt the need to fill the Sunday pasta hole that had been created by Thanksgiving leftovers. Or maybe it was the mother guilt that I wasn’t tending well enough to my family. Leftovers in place of Sunday pasta? It’s almost a mortal sin.

I needed to do penance for my maternal sin. Hence, last night’s dinner. Sunday dinner on Monday. And it almost felt like the weekend all over again. And my penance was served.
