Quote of the Week – January 26, 2011 – Bread
“Even today , with easy, reliable leaveners to depend upon, there is still something mysterious, almost suspenseful about creating a loaf of bread, no matter how many times you have done it.”

Fig and Olive
I didn’t eat this food. This is a gorgonzola samosa with a fig chutney from a tasting menu at a new Fig and Olive restaurant that my parents had the good fortune to visit last week. Looks delicious, doesn’t it? It’s much prettier than the dinner we ate last night.
Last night I prepared a dinner that would be able to simmer slowly in the oven while we went to Louisa’s basketball game from 6:30 to 7:30. I’ve learned over the years that there’s no point in complaining about kids’ sports schedules because there’s nothing you can do about them to make them more family friendly. You just have to work around them and hope that sometimes dinner can be cooked and served fresh on a game night. Last night wasn’t one of those evenings. I had to toss a few ingredients into one of my handy Le Creuset pots and leave it in the oven until we returned. The recipe, if you can call it that since it was really a loose interpretation of one based upon ingredients I had on hand, included chicken, onion, fresh mushrooms, frozen green beans, frozen hash browns, a Penzey’s seasoning blend, and chicken broth. It was tasty enough, and it was nice to come home to a dinner that was waiting for us. But by no means was this as pretty as the Fig and Olive tasting menu. See for yourself:
