Smoked Pork; Walnuts and Bones; Only for the Strong Stomachs

The best thing I’ve tasted since last week was an incredibly moist and flavorful smoked pork sandwich at a local wine festival. We bought the sandwiches for the girls to eat because we weren’t really that hungry, so I had a few stolen bites. The pork had the perfect amount of smoky flavor and the sauce accented the taste without overpowering the pork. Perfection.

In the news… walnuts are good for your bones.

PR from the California Walnuts Commission caught my attention today, particularly this little snippet about walnuts being good for bone health. A study was conducted examining the effects of omega 3 fats from both walnuts and flaxseeds on bone health, and the results were positive for reduced bone resorption and improved bone formation.

A little bonus bit…

I’m feeling guilty that I missed posting yesterday, but I lost most of my workday to my daughter’s field trip (not that I’m complaining). But as my way of atoning for the guilt, I thought I’d share thoughts with you about an article I read covering extreme cuisine around New York City. Unfortunately I can’t find an online copy of this article that was in the “NY Daily News”, but among the five boroughs of New York you can find: creamy goat brains; cow-foot curry; poisonous puffer fish and sperm sac; and a dish that includes tender tongue, slow-cooked pig ear and velvety blood sausage. Why anyone would choose to eat these  is beyond my comprehension. I suspect it’s for the shock value in bragging rights. However, just reading the article made me queasy. As the French say, “chacun son gout” or each to his own tastes.

I’ve known that walnuts are high in Omega -3 but are you saying that Omega-3 is good for bones or is just Omega-3 in walnuts because I’ve always enjoyed fish high in Omega-3.

Also as far as I’m concerned nothing beats a good pulled pork sandwich. In fact I would take a good pulled pork sandwich over creamy goat brains any day.

I believe the study shows that Omega 3s derived from plants what’s good for bones. Not to say fish omega 3 isn’t good for a lot of other things.

I’ll echo your sentiment regarding goat brains vs. pulled pork.

Ahhh, Summertime: There’s nothing better than the smell of a wood smoker and the texture and taste of falling off the bone pork!!

Got something to say?
