Quote of the Week – 6/23/10 – Emeril Lagasse

“And hey, finicky children are much more likely to try a new vegetable if they’ve taken part in growing it. The wonder of planting a seedling, watching it grow, and harvesting it to eat is inexplicable. I can’t think of a better way to show a child the value of fresh food from the table.”

I think that is a great idea but it may take a long time to try alot of vegetables.

But aren’t there 365 dinners in a year? If you set a goal, you could get through 20 vegetables many times over. Odds are good that some of them will become palatable, if not actually enjoyed.

Emeril has a point. I know a lot of little children that love to see their Grandpa’s garden and pick his berries for breakfast. Berries, of course, are a lot more tempting to children than veggies, but the premise is the same. Too bad most children don’t have backyard gardens. Emeril, how do we get them to try veggies?

Actually, I think Emeril appreciates that fact, which is why he’s written several kid friendly cookbooks teaching them scratch cooking, vegetables included.

Got something to say?
