Mom and Grandmom Food Traditions

Considering the fact that we celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend, it seems fitting that yesterday’s good thing to eat were these artichokes that were prepared by my mom. She brought me the gift of a tray of these delicious Italian style artichokes the last time we visited. There’s a lot of work that goes into making this dish, and I’ve never really been able to duplicate them. Luckily my mom learned how from her mom. The passed down recipes are always the best, so I should really try harder to learn this recipe so that I can pass it down to my girls.

As I was thinking about passed along family recipes my latest email from Rachael Ray popped into my mailbox. Although Rachael is a bit overexposed, in my opinion, I like what she does to make cooking accessible to most people. No recipe is difficult in her kitchen. Today’s email, however, made me chuckle. As you’ll find all over the net today, it was dedicated to Mother’s Day with a menu of recipes entitled “grandma’s greatest hits.” It included: Great Grandma’s Baked Chicken – okay, I’ll buy into that one, I have my own recipe from grandma. Wild Rice with Pine Nuts (uh, wild rice and pine nuts were expensive, exotic ingredients, not in the pantry of many grandmoms); asparagus salad (I doubt granny made asparagus into a salad, she probably boiled them and served with butter or olive oil); Chilled Raspberry Cream Pie (not my grandma, but I’ll accept maybe others  did); Pomegranate Coolers – What?????

Would your great grandma have cooked this menu?

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!
