4 Days from Cow to Cone
Over the weekend we paid a visit to a nephew who is studying at Penn State. We took the quick tour of the campus and town to get a flavor for the school, and to give Annie and Louisa a flavor for college life. But the best flavor we had was just before we left. On the suggestion of this nephew we visited the Berkey Creamery, which is run by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Department of Food Science. Penn State keeps a 225 cow herd which contributes half the milk used in the school’s Creamery. They process milk, cheese, and ice cream which on average takes only 4 days to travel from the cow to your lips.
I tried the Coconut Chip flavor ice cream, which may very well have been the best I’ve ever tasted. It was rich, creamy and flavorful with slivers of chips, rather than chunks, that crack and melt in your mouth. If you ever visit Penn State, you must visit the Creamery.
In Other Food News… No Soup for You, Again!
Today’s news will only be appreciated by fans of the old “Seinfeld” sitcom. I’m still a huge fan of the program, and often watch episodes while I’m preparing dinner. Recently one of our favorite episodes featuring a grumpy Manhattan soup shop proprietor was on. This man was nicknamed “The Soup Nazi” for being very particular about the way his customers behaved in his shop. When I realized last week that episode was the flavor du jour, I rushed the girls into the kitchen to watch it. The Soup Nazi’s famous quote in that episode is spoken anytime someone disobeys his ordering rules, “No Soup for You!” As Joe and I laughed, the girls kind of looked at us in confusion. What can I say? These jokes need time to ripen.
Word is out that the real Soup Nazi, Al Yeganeh, plans to reopen his stand on Eighth and 55th Streets in June. But unlike his old role of dishing out the soup with the scolds, he will operate behind the scenes developing new products.

Got something to say?

I think what made the ice cream great and what makes the soup nazi’s soup great is the same thing. Fresh ingredients. There is no replacement for freshness.
