A Regular Dinner and the “Duh” Report of the Week
My family knows that there are very few “regular” meals in my dinner arsenal. Usually I’m trying out a new recipe because I’m testing a cookbook, or just because it looks good. Plus, I bore easily. But a regular meal seems to be slipping into my unpredictable repertoire. This salmon on pumpernickel sandwich has become a favorite of Louisa’s and she often requests it for dinner. This recipe comes from that popular “Cooking Light” book I’ve been mentioning over the past few months. Who would have thought that smoked salmon, dill and onion cream cheese, pumpernickel, red onion and alfalfa sprouts would be a hit with kids? I can’t argue with that so it appears we now have a regular meal in this household.
In Sensational News this Week…
The lobby group the CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest) has released their Xtreme Eating 2010 report, listing their top selections for high calorie restaurant choices. In my opinion, there shouldn’t be many surprises in this list for any semi-conscious diner. Really. I believe this should be called the “Duh” Report instead. Whether it’s a meal of a hamburger, fries and a Coke at the Five Guys restaurant chain or the Pasta Carbonara at the Cheesecake Factory, you would have to have been living under a rock during the last decade not to know that ground beef, fried food, cream, and bacon aren’t good for us to eat on a regular basis in the portion sizes you find in the typical chain restaurant. On a regular basis we should be eating Louisa’s favorite smoked salmon sandwich – but how many American’s really like those alfalfa sprouts?
Quote of the Week – 5/26/10
“You’ve got to get hands-on, get stuck in and extract the most from the food in the most primal way. Use your hands to crush and combine the fresh herbs, garlic, and spices. Massage the marinade into the meat, and press the seasonings in with your hands instead of using a brush.” – Adam Perry Lang, “BBQ 25″
Photo of the Week – 5/26/10 – First Burger of the Season
I’m reviewing a new barbecue cookbook for Entertaining.about.com, so last night I made the first grilled burgers of the season for dinner, using the recipe in this book. It must be Memorial Day next weekend.
