So Which Smell Do You Prefer in the Morning?
Yesterday morning I came downstairs to the overwhelmingly wonderful smell of bacon frying in the kitchen. I was more than a little confused since it was a weekday morning, and I didn’t expect that Joe was making breakfast for me. It wasn’t Mother’s Day and it wasn’t my birthday. It turns out that Louisa was frying bacon for her lunch. How many fifth graders do you know that would decide they wanted a bacon sandwich for lunch and would take the initiative to prepare their own bacon? She had found bacon in the freezer, defrosted it in the microwave, and fried it up in the pan. She completed her recipe with rye bread spread with mustard and baby spinach leaves. It was Louisa’s own adaptation of the BLT. If she had asked me to make this for her lunch, I probably would have cooked the bacon for her the night before and made the sandwich in the morning. Instead, I was left with the clean-up – the decidedly ugly part of this lunch.
Anyway, I usually love coming downstairs to the smell of coffee being prepared for me. Now I’m not so sure which surprise smell I prefer in the A.M. – bacon or coffee. Bacon has the power to transform any meal, any time of the day into something special. The promise of bacon, even it it wasn’t being prepared for me, put a smile on my face, at least as wide as the aroma of coffee. How about you?

Got something to say?

I love all breakfast smells. Coffee, bacon, sausage, eggs, toast ,mellon , pancakes, the list goes on without end. There are many foods that smell good but I think it is the combination of breakfast foods that surpass them all.
