Help for Your Sweet Tooth

Candy JarsIf you ever considered taming your sweet tooth, help may be on the way. There’s nothing like a little fiscal incentive to make any change possible, and the declining supply of sugar is driving up candy prices. So don’t be surprised when the next time you go to purchase your favorite candy, the package is smaller and the price is higher, according to a recent Nielsen Co. report.

Don’t blame me for trying to sugar coat the news.

Why is the sugar supply declining? Isit to much demand? Poor growing seasons? Too high fructose corn syrup? What is driving to eat less sugar and be more healthy?

It’s been a combination of factors globally, including weather affecting harvests in two high production areas (Brazil and India) and sugar resources being funneled into ethanol production. In the U.S., sugar beet production has been affected by bad weather, and farmers have shifted production to more profitable corn crops.

Got something to say?
