Who Can You Trust?

I know for certain these muffins were made without fat (except for the chocolate chips!)

I know for certain these muffins were made without fat (except for the chocolate chips!) And they were very yummy, by the way.

The current food news continues to convince me that when it comes to our food supply, the only food you can really trust is what you make in your own kitchen. Last week I reported on e coli bacteria found in soda fountains. There was another, less dangerous news bit that hit the wires last week regarding calorie counts in fast food. Researchers discovered that calorie counts in restaurant food are often higher than those which have been posted. Let’s face it. If the food handlers are preparing portions without the benefit of scales or pre-measured components, then they’re relying on their own eyeballing for the proper portion size, imprecise at best.

Better to fix your own food at home where, if portion size really matters, or allergies are a concern, or fat content matters, you know from first hand knowledge that it meets your needs.

Having been a fry cook in a fast food burger chain I find that portions are precisely measured. They do not give a customer any more of a portion than they advertise. I think it is a corporate economy of scale thing. I am only speaking about weights and portions not calorie content. Considering how calories have to be calculated I would imagine that there may be a margin of error.

That’s why this report surprised me. I guess it’s really most a issue for people following strict calorie diets, or counting Weight Watcher points, etc. where every little slip blows the whole diet.

Got something to say?
