For the Love of Chocolate, or Is It Something Else?

It appears that chocolate lovers will stop at nothing to find ways to justify eating one of their favorite ingredients. A while back I fell in love with the chocolate bacon candy bar from Vosges Haut Chocolat. It didn’t seem much of a stretch since salty and chocolate are an understandable pairing. The little chewy bits of bacon didn’t hurt.

But Woman’sDay.com decided to search out more extreme chocolate pairings which they report on in 8 Curious Chocolate-Covered Creations. The bacon and chocolate combo made the list, but many of the other pairings left me scratching my head and asking why? Chocolate on carrots, well, maybe if the carrots are sweet. Chocolate on a raw onion makes no sense at all. Several of the chocolate dipped items fall into the bug tier of the food pyramid. I suppose that’s fine if you live in a third world country, but not for me. Some selections offered inspiration (Fritos, anyone?) But others made me wonder what was really going on. Is this extreme chocolate cuisine due to a love of chocolate, or is it more about impressing other people? My guess is the latter. If so, why waste a good vat of melted chocolate?

What do you think?

There must be something special about chocolate because I really can’t think of another food that people would even dare pair with so many other foods.

Maybe cheese? But that qualifies as another one of my favorite foods.

The right cheese with the right chocolate with the right wine. Could be awesome.

Got something to say?
