I’ll Drink to That!

Hold the milk, pass me a brew.
You really need to keep up with food news, or you could miss all of the good stuff. I was just going over some old emails and found a news bit that made me smile. Scientists in Spain studied close to 1700 women, and found that beer drinking women have stronger bones than non-beer drinkers. This is because beer contains high levels of silcon, a substance that is good for the reduction of thinning bones, a problem in aging women that leads to fractures. Silicon also promotes the formation of new bone. Beer also contains high levels of phytoestrogens, the plant version of estrogen, which is good for keeping bones healthy.
Even light beer drinkers, meaning less than a pint a day, showed denser bones than non-beer drinkers. So you can keep the milk, pass me a pint.

Got something to say?

It’s interesting what people study or what studies get published to the mainstream public. Could insideous viral marketing be afoot? I’m going to consider that possibility over the next few beers I consume.
Hi, Any mention re dark or light beer? I’ve always heard dark beer is better for you. As a matter of fact, drinking Guiness (very dark) in moderation in the U.K. is considered healthy for pregnant and nursing mothers.
They didn’t mention dark or light, so I don’t believe it made a difference.
As for studies getting into the mainstream public, I wouldn’t say the site where I found this study was particularly mainstream. I think it’s a little secret those Brits are trying to keep to themselves!
