Not Lovin’ It

The Lesser of these Evils

The Lesser of the Possible Evils

Just in time for the release of the most current data on the obesity levels in America (yep, they’re still increasing), McDonald’s has decided to introduce a new item to their menu, the Angus Burgers. It wasn’t enough to have quarter pounders with cheese or double quarter pounders with cheese – nope they had to figure out another way to tempt the American palate into eating greater portions of meat and fat. The three new Angus burgers weigh in at 750 – 790 calories, with 39 – 40 grams of fat. I haven’t had one yet, so I can’t really say whether they taste any better than the rest of the McDonald’s burger lineup. But my guess is that the appeal is in the extra fat, heft, and mouth feel, but that they taste like McDonald’s hamburgers with different toppings.

I like big, juicy burgers, but I really don’t like making my big juicy thighs look any bigger. I also don’t like making my arteries build any thicker, juicier linings of fat. Knowledge is power and so I pulled Joe over to the computer to look at the options together. We debated what would be the happy middle ground between a satisfying burger sandwich and one that is going to shorten our life spans. I proposed a simple burger at 250 calories and 9 grams of fat. Joe disagreed saying that he’d have to eat something besides that to satisfy his appetite. We decided that the McDouble is probably your best tradeoff. It has 390 calories and 19 grams of fat. As Joe says, you can’t eat only vegetables. But you may as well make sure you’re healthy enough to eat anything in the future.
