I Won! Or Did I?

Woo hoo! This baby weighs over 20 pounds!

Last night we all attended the school’s big annual fundraiser. Usually our grade school PTA organizes a fashion show of teachers and students at a local catering hall. Throughout the evening, over a 100 baskets are raffled off. I haven’t won a single basket since the first year when I won a free summer day camp for Annie a (great prize since I was sending her there anyway). This year they made the fundraiser an event for the whole family, with the theme of Dancing with the Teachers. A dozen of the school’s bravest souls took dancing lessons for weeks, to perform last night. We purchased tickets to see the show, and paid for votes at a $1 each. There were only 22 basket this time, so I only purchased $10 worth of raffles. And surprise, surprise I won the Trader Joe’s Gift Basket.

I kind of consider this some kind of karmic luck. I mean, when you consider what I write about on this blog, it seems fitting that I get the organic foodie basket, doesn’t it? And oh my goodness, look at all the goodies that were in it!

A lot of snacks and sweets were in the "basket".

The “basket” is a huge, insulated tote which I’m sure will come in handy. The best part is that I have never tried most of the goodies in the basket. I have my usual list of items that I usually pick up at that store. I buy their blueberry flavored ground flax seed (much better than it sounds); frozen potstickers; frozen veggies; frozen shrimp; nuts; cereal bars; dry imported pasta, gourmet cheeses; gourmet sausages; tapenades; and Cat Cookies. I try to resist the snack foods but sometimes I’ll pick up some crackers, pretzels or Pirate Booty – although I know that the less snack food I keep around, the better for us all. This is the kind of “convenience” food I try to stock in my house because Trader Joe’s is organic and the food is much less processed. Not to mention that their prices are great.

This basket has several items that will be useful as part of regular meals. There’s some dried pasta; a jar of marinara sauce (should be interesting since I always make my own); a mix for cornbread that came with a recipe for corn pudding attached to it; dried fruit (anyone know what rambutan is?); coffee; peanut butter; and nuts.

All the rest is snack food. Cookies, white cheddar corn puffs (which will be my downfall), chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate sauce, truffle brownie mix, and a 1 pound+ bar of belgian milk chocolate. So with all of this temptation now in the house, and bathing suit season on the horizon, I have to ask myself, did I really win last night?

People always reckon that you are a genius with lots of time on your hands if you have baked something, but really it’s often only a matter of getting the oven on, and mixing together a few magic ingredients in a bowl. — Rachel Allen, “Favorite Food at Home”
