I Know this Will Be Tough… But Avoid All Alfalfa

Will our sandwiches ever be crunchy again?

Will our sandwiches ever be crunchy again?

All of the you alfalfa fans beware! The latest salmonella outbreak has been found in alfalfa sprouts. First there was salmonella in peanuts, pistachio nuts and peanut butter, now the alfalfa sprouts have been hit.  The outbreak involves growers in several states, and indicating that they haven’t followed the FDA Sprout Guidance (no, I’m not making this up). What’s left for us to eat? It’s a sad day for alfalfa fans.

I love alfalfa sprouts too, but if it’s only the crunch you will be missing, there’s a great substitute. Try very, very, very thinly sliced cucumbers for a nice cool crunch. Other crunchies could be thin carrots, celery cut lengthwise, and thinly sliced fennel which adds a very different flavor. Also, think apple. Its cool, crunchy and adds an interesting taste to simple sandwiches like ham and cheese. And, you can always buy organic seeds and sprout them yourself!

They’re all great ideas, but none are as easy as those sprouts.

Got something to say?
