I Wonder… What’s with All the Roosters?

Roosters for the Kitchen
I was looking through a recent kitchen supplies brochure, and the latest in rooster design jumped out at me and made me question why there is such an attraction to these cocksure birds? A search on the term “rooster” at Sur la Table and Williams-Sonoma websites turned up 21 and 23 items, respectively. You can find everything from rooster candlesticks to rooster aprons, to rooster plates. I understand that roosters are one of the design elements integral to French, country decor. But I wonder what the relevance is to those among us who place it in their kitchens.
I would imagine that many of the people decorating their kitchens with roosters have never seen a live one. Likewise, many of these folks have never been on a farm. And probably even fewer of them have been to France!
So what’s with all the roosters? Is it because they represent a rise and shine kind of attitude, something many of us (myself included) wish we felt in the morning? Or is the rooster a nod to the males in our lives? By placing roosters in our kitchens, are we giving the room an infusion of masculinity? Are we hoping to contradict the attitude expressed by Margaret Mead that “When men cook cooking is viewed as an important activity; when women cook, it is just a household chore.” Does the rooster in our kitchen lend a greater air of authority to the woman at the stove?

Finally, perhaps on a more simple level, could the rooster represent our desire to get back to the farm? We long for our agrarian roots, and although we are far from the life, the rooster reminds us of what we’re missing? I wonder.

Got something to say?

Foghorn J. Leghorn, Chanticleer where have you gone? What a quandary our musings hatched! I believe the French have a saying for this. What is that French phrase again? What is it? Aah yes,
I got it.

Anyway, what would rather have hanging in your kitchen a steer, pig, fish, or rooster?
Oh, a piggie by far. I love those little piggies. Perhaps it’s due to my Chinese astrology sign. My college roommate grew up on a farm. One day she took a few of us to visit the farm and they had a whole new batch of baby piggies. I was smitten.
Being a piggie too (astrologically of course) I prefer pigs. Piggies are cute and cuddily. Ever try hugging a rooster?
P.S. Can a rooster root for truffles???
