Thinking May Be Hazardous to Your Diet

A Healthy Snack - The Cure for Writer's Bottom?

A Healthy Snack - The Cure for Writer's Bottom?

I just couldn’t resist reporting on this little piece of information I found in the January issue of “Prevention” magazine. Researchers at Laval University in Quebec found that students who performed a series of mental exercises ate 253 more calories in the same amount of time as students who did nothing more than relax. The researchers discovered that brain work causes a large fluctuation in blood sugar levels, creating the impulse to snack.

For years I’ve thought that it was the act of sitting in a chair for hours that caused me to want to snack, and created the homegrown seat cushion that I now cart around in my jeans. Instead, it was my sneaky brain causing all of this trouble.

The advice, naturally, is to keep healthy snacks and water nearby as you sit and think – which explains the small tray of grapefruit wedges you see in this picture. However, I suspect that once I make it through this so-called snack (hah!) I’ll be hunting down something much more interesting. Wouldn’t you, my fellow brainiacs?

How do you know it’s not?

Got something to say?
